A cookie press is used to force cookie dough through a disk with a hole in the center of it , giving the cookie a shape such as a star, a Christmas tree, a heart, etc. A pastry bag with a large tip can be used to form log shapes, and ropes.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Cream together butter, icing sugar, vanilla and salt. Gradually add cornstarch and flour. Whip with an electric mixer until fluffy. Place into a cookie press and press out cookies on cool baking sheet. Decorate with candied cherries or dragees if desired. Bake 12-15 minutes. Let cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet, then remove to wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Gradually blend flour mixture into butter mixture. Fill cookie press. Form cookies on ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugar, if desired. Bake 12 to 15 minutes. Remove at once to cooling racks.

Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Fill cookie press with dough, then form cookies on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
